The Government Art Collection holds over 13,500 works of art by British artists. These works help promote British art and culture.
With works of art spanning five centuries, the Government Art Collection (GAC) is the largest most dispersed collection of British art in the world. Two thirds of the Collection is usually on display in British Government buildings in nearly every capital city. Placed in offices and official residences, the Collection, which dates from 1898, helps to promote British art and history while contributing to cultural diplomacy.
The GAC’s first exhibition in a public gallery opens at the Whitechapel Gallery, in London, on 3 June 2011. Five separate displays will run until 2 September 2012. Admission will be free.
Visit the GAC website to view the Collection, listen to artists’ interviews, learn the history of the GAC and much more.
