architecture and design

We are responsible for the quality of architectural design in England. Good design in the built environment is important for strong cultural, social, economic and environmental reasons.

Good design can have a positive effect on commercial productivity, public service delivery, and how people feel about their quality of life. It can improve the environmental performance of buildings and places and promote sustainable ways of living.

We raise awareness about the importance of good architectural design and encourage high standards of design quality in building projects. This includes parks, open spaces and overall environmental quality.

  • Better public buildings initiative – revitalising neighbourhoods and cities, reducing crime, illness and truancy, and helping public services perform better
  • Education – developing young people's awareness of architecture and the built environment, creating a future demand for better buildings, spaces and places
  • Engaging Places – unlocking the educational potential of the historic and contemporary built environment

Our Historic Environment section gives information on listed buildings of historic or architectural interest.
