22 February 2008

Strategy document launched

The Rt Hon Andy Burnham MP, Secretary of State for Culture Media and Sport has today, in partnership with BERR and DIUS, launched a strategy for the creative economy.

Creative Britain: New Talents for the New Economy documents 26 commitments, which outline how the Government will take action to support the creative industries.

It is available to download from the DCMS website. If you wish to receive a hard copy please send an e-mail to Tracy.Kenney@culture.gsi.gov.uk with your full postal address.

Creative Economy Programme - The future

The publication of the new strategy – ‘Creative Britain’ is a major stage in the Creative Economy Programme (CEP) which began in 2005 and has previously seen the production of the CEP Working Group Reports (in 2006) and the report ‘Staying Ahead’, published by the Work Foundation (in 2007).

Many organisations and individuals have contributed ideas and information into the CEP. These contributions live on, in their own right and in the impact they have made to gaining recognition and understanding of the need for a fuller and better programme of action to support ’s creative economy.

The CEP will now continue, to fulfil the commitments and other initiatives outlined in ‘Creative Britain’ but also to develop and build on the inputs to the programme so that the whole baseline moves forward. Not all of the contributions made to date could be included or acknowledged in ‘Creative Britain’. We encourage all those who have participated, to continue their enthusiastic involvement in the next phase and we invite new contributors to the movement to build an even strong creative economy across the country.

New evidence published

A series of research projects, undertaken during 2007, have now been published on this website.  Together they represent a large advance in DCMS and resarch partners' understanding of the creative industries.  The research is available online.

Staying ahead: the economic performance of the UK's creative industries

The Work Foundation was commissioned by Government to produce an Economic Analysis of the Creative Industries in the UK.    Their resulting report, Staying Ahead,  the economic performance of the UK's creative industries has been published today, and is available online.

Tessa Jowell, then Secretary of State for Culture Media and Sport said "I very much welcome The Work Foundation’s report. This analysis shows just how vibrant – and how economically important – our creative industries are. It reinforces how vital government investment in creativity is, nurturing talent which in turn creates jobs and economic success. But it also emphasises the importance of other factors such as education, access to finance and business skills. The report is a key part of our work towards publishing a green paper on the creative industries later this year, and we will consider its findings carefully"
